Friendship and Friction in the Fight for Our Energy Future

“Few things I’ve ever read have done a better job of getting at the complexity of the climate fight: how we need to do many things, at the same time, and without stumbling over each other! This is also a moving testament to the power of ongoing dialogue and friendship, just the sort of thing we need to be thinking about in this ever-angrier movement.”

– Bill McKibben, contributor to the New Yorker and founder of the fossil fuel divestment campaign

A Guide to the Ingredients Behind a Better Bottle

Do you know what's in your drink? Which grains are in your favorite bourbon? How artisanal tequila is made? Or why molasses-based rum is richer than its sugarcane counterpart?

In Spirits Distilled, Nat Harry (re)introduces readers to the fruits, plants, and processes that form the backbone of the world's most popular and underappreciated spirits, inviting readers to regard everything that goes into them, including the skilled hands that turn those ingredients into art. Serving as a San Francisco World Spirits judge, farm-to-table mixologist, and professional spirits buyer, Harry has traveled the world in search of the splendid and the subtle, looking behind the label and past the publicity to hand-pick some of the world's most unique and exquisite craft spirits. Now their share their knowledge, built over 20 years in the industry, in this visually informative guidebook that takes the reader from Oaxaca to Islay and Ica to Louisville to answer the question: what makes a great bottle?

We are anthropologists by training, university teachers by trade, editors by choice, and students by nature. We have sought and found inspiration in people and society's written and unwritten histories and backgrounds from around the world. We are curious about how we, as humans, conceptualize and speak about our environment, experiences, diverse backgrounds, and varied perspectives.
